چکیده
A few decades ago, it was said that the debate on nuclear power had “reached an intensity unprecedented in the history of technology controversies” (Kitschelt 1986). However, the controversy over nuclear power has resurfaced today with a similar gravity. Advocates point to nuclear power as a much-needed energy source in an era of rising demand and the need to curb carbon emission levels, and of political instability in oil exporting countries warranting greater energy independence. Opponents cite public health and safety risks, and environmental damage from processing, transport and mining (uranium, as a fuel source). In regard to the issue of political instability, the spectre of sabotage and nuclear weapons is raised. Insofar as unintentional occurrences are concerned, one needs only to look back on the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan—a disaster of major proportions, and of which the eff ects are not yet fully understood.

Radioactive Graphite Management at Uk Magnox Nuclear Power Stations
The UK nuclear power industry is predominantly based on gas-cooled, graphite moderated reactors with their being 20 operating and 6 shutdown Magnox reactors. The radioactive graphite issues associated with the Magnox reactors relate mainly to the reactor core graphite but, at two of the stations, there is also another graphite waste stream which results from the handling of their particular des...
متن کاملFlow Blockage Accident Analysis of Tehran Research Reactor Fuel Assembly
Tehran Research Reactor (T.R.R.) is a pool-type, 5 MW thermal research reactor. One probable event is that if some external objects or debris fall down into the reactor core and cause obstruction of the coolant flow through one of the fuel assemblies, decreasing the surface flow area, ceases the coolant flow, and also raises the fuel and sheaths tempe...
متن کاملFinancial planning for the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant
After their service life is over, nuclear power plants must be decommissioned. Accordingly, Sweden has a system with segregated funds to cover the costs. Payments to the funds are dictated by the results of recurrent cost estimates. Recently, differences have been observed between different estimations for the Barsebäck BWR:s. Therefore, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, who oversees the ...
متن کاملRadioactive contamination in the Arctic--sources, dose assessment and potential risks.
Arctic residents, whose diets comprise a large proportion of traditional terrestrial and freshwater foodstuffs, have received the highest radiation exposures to artificial radionuclides in the Arctic. Doses to members of both the average population and selected indigenous population groups in the Arctic depend on the rates of consumption of locally-derived terrestrial and freshwater foodstuffs,...
متن کاملThe Free Release of the Materials Resulting from the Decommissioning of the Vvr-s Research Reactor
All materials used during the nuclear reactor operation are potential radioactive wastes. The role of the free release of materials from regulatory control is to reduce the amount of radioactive wastes. The CNCAN allows licensees to release materials according to pre-established criteria which comply with Romanian standards and international recommendations. In this paper, the methodology used ...
